Novak Djokovic is a great tennis player, no doubt about it. He appears to be defensive when he’s playing on the baseline but that’s fine with me, he’s still winning matches and that’s the important thing.
Djokovic is seeded second in 2009 China Open and surprisingly, he wins it all.
Victor Hanescu (3, 5), Viktor Troicki (3, 0), Fernando Verdasco (3, 6, 1), Robin Soderling (3, 3) and Marin Cilic (2, 6), these players put the young Serbian in tough tests.
Before winning the finals with Cilic, Nole admitted in his interviews that he was very nervous that time.
“Marin probably had the best tournament of his life. He was going for all the shots, being very aggressive, things were working for him. So I was aware of that.” The 2008 Australian Open Champion said.
“I just tried to be patient and wait for the chances. The rain delay helped me out; I got my nerves together and thought about the tactics for the continuation of the match. From that moment on, when I stepped back on the court I was another player and played very well.”
And Nole did it! He won the tiebreaker during the second set, 7-6.
BIG KUDOS FOR YOU, NOLE!
Before I forget, Nole is back in the Top 3 in the world.
And he is awarded with $500,000 in prize money.
Although Nole opened 2009 with a loss to Gulbis back in Brisbane, he still grab his 12th title in Dubai then in Serbia last April.
Nole made final appearances in several occasions.
- Miami (lost to Murray)
- Monte Carlo (lost to Nadal)
- Rome (lost to Nadal)
- Halle (lost to Haas)
- Cincinnati (lost to Federer)
In Grand Slams, Nole couldn’t defend his title in Australian Open and retire due to heat exhaustion during the quarterfinals, Kohli upset him in straights during the third-round at Roland Garros. Nole came back into the last eight at Wimbledon but fell to Haas and made three consecutive semi-appearance at US Open.
Shanghai Masters is next. Nole receives a bye in the first round and is the defending champion, what do you think will happen?
