French Open 2011: Streak Ends for Novak Djokovic!

The Biggest Upset of 2011: Blaming someone is for losers and it’s inappropriate to blame Roger Federer for ending Novak Djokovic’s 47-match winning streak since December 2010 [6-7(5), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(5)]. In French Open 2011 semifinals, Federer was just playing an exceptional tennis of his life. His service was constantly hard to read (18 aces in entire match), he’s also pressuring Djokovic with his forehand crosscourt groundstrokes and he managed to stay calm in every point. Djokovic, on the other hand, allowed his nerves to control him in the most important times (41 unforced errors in entire match). He has his chances. He could have win the fourth set and would have pushed the match into a final set if only he held his service at 5-4.

The Biggest Win of an Asian: She’s the first Chinese to win a Tennis Grand Slam in singles, defeating the defending champion in French Open 2011 (6-4, 7-6(0). She showed the world how an Asian should play tennis and the secret success is: Consistency. In her match with Francesca Schiavone, she made sure the placement of her groundstrokes were deep and un-returnable (31 winners in the match). A number of her aggressive shots were out of control but she did not give up. She kept on fighting and was not losing confidence during long rallies. Her name is Na Li and she also become the first person to defeat three consecutive Top-10 contenders in a clay slam (Victoria Azarenka- QF, Maria Sharapova-SF, Francesca Shiavone-F). She made me feel proud to be an Asian!

The Unexpected:

  1. Daniela Hantuchova thrashed World No. 1 (Caroline Wozniacki) in the third round 6-1, 6-3
  2. Another clay-dominant contender from Spain by the name of Nicolas Almagro was upset in the first round.
  3. Gisela Dulko, who’s responsible for the eviction of Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic in 2009 Wimbledon and 2010 Australian Open respectively, stunned Samantha Stosur in three sets during the third round.
  4. No American in both singles’ draw made the quarterfinals.
